The inter-war years in Germany, the period of the ill-fated Weimar Republic, were chiefly notable for their social and political instability.Yet it was at this time that the German cinema produced its finest masterpieces.Influenced by the fascination with the startling and horrific of German Expressionist painting and stylization of Max Reinhardt's work in the theatre, actors and directors like Paul Wegener, Emil Jannings, Ernst Lubitsch, Henrik Galeen, F.W. Munau, G.W.Pabst, Robert Wiene and Peter Lorre consistently maintained the extraordinarily high standard of German studio production.
In many ways, too, the films of this period, and especially those included in this volume - The Golem, Nosferatu, M. The Threepenny Opera - reflect the collective malaise of Germany in the 'twenties and 'thirties, showing an obsessional concern with
dark, irrational forces and with crime and criminal society.
Volume contains two of the greatest early German fantasy films and two of the 'thirties crime films.
