Very good condition in a good dustwrapper; dustwrapper has old tape repairs to reverse and tear to lower panel, is somewhat sunned, with loss to head and tail of spine panel and extremities of flap folds; moderate foxing to endpapers; some spotting to page edges; gift inscription on front free endpaper. "The contents of this book are indicated on the title page. In arranging the general set up, the plan has been to treat each of the 45 Magisterial Districts into which the Province has been divided as separate units, and to group subjects accordingly. As will be seen from the accompanying map, each District has been allotted a registered number, beginning with Port Shepstone, the most southerly, as No. 1, and ending with Ingwavuma, the most northerly, as No. 45. All spots or places have been numbered serially as against the registered number of the District in which they are situated. For example, Nqutu (No. 31) and the several historical spots within its boundaries are shown thus: Battle of Blood River (31-1), Prince Imperial Monument (31-2), Cumbeza Stream (31-3), Sandlwana (31-4), etc., a method which will permit of additions being made in due course without in any way interfering with the book's present make-up. As an additional help in locating places, their serial numbers have been shown on the map to indicate their approximate situation, except in the case of Durban and Pietermaritzburg, where this was found impracticable, owing to the lack of space. Whilst this work does not pretend to be a history of the Province, it would have been incomplete without reference to some of the more outstanding characters, both European and Native, which have been associated with its history and development, and for this reason a few short sketches of these have also been included."
