Visually the exterior appearance is exceptional and particularly internally,is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation for a book of its near 50 year-old age.It really is an exceptional, exemplary example for copy for its cleanliness, brightness and lack of major detracting faults.              While the slate industry is no longer the dominant industry of North Wales, its political, social and economic influence is still significant. Many towns and villages owe their existence to the industry, notably Blaenau Ffestiniog,Bethesda and scores of quarry villages, like those in the Nantlle area of Caernarvonshire.                                  Dr. Lindsay,an economics historian whose home is in Caernarvonshire, gives a comprehensive account of the vast open quarries of Penrhyn and Dinorwic, the open pits of Nantlle and the mines and quarries of Merioneth, from their earliest days to the present. She traces the rise of the industry from the time when slate was considered common property to the late 19thC when ninety-five concerns employed over 14,000 men; and she describes its decline thereafter.                The organisation of the industry is depicted, revealing characters such as Richard Pennant, the great pioneer, who became the first Lord Penrhyn in 1783; John Evans, the Caernarvon lawyer, who developed Cilgwyn Quarry; and Samuel Holland, Liberal MP and owner of quarries in Merioneth. Other topics include markets, transport, industrial relations and social conditions.      For many people in Wales, the Penrhyn dispute, which lasted from 1900 to 1903,was the most memorable occurrence in the industry's history. By many others the closure of Dinorwic Quarry in 1969 was regarded as 'the end of an era'.         Please contact seller, for correct shipping/P+p quotes - particularly ALL overseas customers - BEFORE ordering through the order page!
