'Sea-Jargon' is the first dictionary of the language of the sea in all its glory, vulgarity and humour. Lew Lind has collected the words and phrases used by seamen both past and present: ditties sung for pleasure and the sea shanty work songs, songs written around a paddle wheel steamers of the freshwater rivers and ribald songs for off duty relaxation. There are entries from the Royal Navy,Royal Australian Navy and United States Navy, the Merchant Service and the Waterfront. Professor Arthur Delbridge writes in his Foreword 'The jargon of the seas shows the influence of many nationalities . . . . . Lew Lind's allegiance is ultimately to only one mistress - the sea . . . 'Sea Jargon' listens to seamen at talk'. This book shows how much the language of the sea has influenced our everyday speech, and how difficult it often is to tell which came first. This book will prove fascinating reading for all those interested in the sea and our living language.
