Original black-and-white printed portrait photograph mounted on green-gray mat board. The photograph shows Marian Liljens, seated and looking at viewers. She wears a diving uniform with medals. Inscribed by Liljens on the back in black ink: "With compliments to my friend Mr. Robert Hill from, Marian Liljens, Chicago, Ill. Dec. 15th 1903." 6 3/4" x 8 3/4." Lightly embossed imprint in lower-margin of the mat board: "J. B. Wilton, 156 Wabash Ave., Chicago." Inscribed in the lower-right corner on the photo: "Marian Liljens, High-Diver, 1903." Mat board virtually pristine and intact except for minuscule corner wear. Photograph very clean and intact except for slight smudging at the top. A Near Fine copy. Marian Liljens was a Russian high diver and one of few women at the time to participate in the sport professionally. Liljens was specifically a stunt diver. She performed at the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) during the early twentieth century and was originally billed as a Swedish diver.
