[1986] Deep blue hardcover bound in genuine leather, 686 pages, 32 pages of photographs have been inserted by the publisher. Published as The Library of the Presidents. Leather binding features beautiful gilt designs. Sophisticated binding, four raised ridges on spine. Lettering, designs stamped with gorgeous accents of 22kt. gold - a hallmark of fine bookmaking. This beautifully bound genuine leather binding was hand selected from individually tanned hides. Textured and shaded, acid-neutral paper won't turn yellow over time. Pages are Smyth-sewn into the binding for permanence (not glued like ordinary books). Endpapers are beautiful satin moiré, specially dyed for the publisher. Edges gilded on three sides to enhance the book's elegance. Satin ribbon page marker bound in binding. Condition: Light rubbed marks/abrasion to gilt edges, mostly on fore-edge (due to shelving, handling); a black drip-like printer's ink stain on p. 204 (partly offset on p. 205), which according to collector, happened during the printing of the book (shipped that way from publisher). It does not greatly affect several lines of text on those pages. Else, book is Near Fine. No cracks of tears to binding. Gilt designs and lettering on binding are not chipped or rubbed. No bookplates or stickers. No page tears. Book purchased by book collector for display in his bookcase. Kept in temperature-controlled environment; book not smelly or speckled with humidity stains - and no smoker's smell. McKinley, who served as our Republican President from 1897 to 1901, led the United States during the Spanish-American War. The United States annexed the Philippines during his presidency. During his career, McKinley's reputation continued to grow. He became a person of great public interest, and thousands of Americans flocked to meet him and hear him speak. He became a practiced orator. He communicated a warmth, a friendliness. He always looked happy and fulfilled - never seemed to be affected by the demands and encroachments. McKinley was assassinated by an anarchist soon after his reelection. An insightful biography, well written.
