Kondo, Fumiko (after Diego Rivera) : Portrait of Mexico

[Berkeley, Calif.: Fumiko Kondo], 1937.

Fumiko Kondo (1919-2011). Original ink drawing on handmade Whatman paper (watermarked 1933), a design for a dust jacket for Diego Rivera's Portrait of Mexico, published by Covici-Friede. Measures 10 x 21 inches unfloded. Printed signature and date written in pencil inside front flap, presumably in the artist's hand: "Fumiko Kondo / H.A. 6B / April 29, 1937". This was an assignment for an art class; on the verso the instructor has written: "Lettering too thin for the black & white masses". On the "spine" is written Kondo's grade for this drawing, a B-. Very light browning along folds.
