Caption under the title: "A woodcut by an unknown artist, published about 1450, possibly as a tract. It did not appear, so far as is known, in any book of its time. Perhaps in those far-off days it was also a herald of the New Year." Original Christmas card printed on fine paper with stylized font in red and black ink. No date, circa 1950s-1965. 9 1/4" x 13." Three unnumbered pages, complete. One leaf folded in half vertically and printed on three sides. Paper is very clean and intact except for a few minuscule wrinkles. A Fine copy. This Christmas card features a facsimile of a medieval artwork from around 1450 which shows the titular ship from Alexandria. In poetic form, the card gives the reader a Christmas greeting. Excerpt: "And so, once again, from out of the ancient days we send this greeting, still as simple as its language. Lawton and Freda Kennedy." Lawton Kennedy (1900-1980) was a renowned printer based in the San Francisco. Kennedy began his training and showed his prowess in fine printing at an early age. In his career, he worked for other prominent Bay Area printers and printing presses including John Henry Nash, Johnck & Seeger, Jane Grabhorn's Colt Press, and Albert Sperisen's Black Vine press. Freda Ann Kennedy (nee Lea; 1904-1965) married Lawton Kennedy in 1925. She and Lawton frequently collaborated on projects until her passing in 1965. This card was printed by Lawton Kennedy and possibly Freda as well.. Book. Book Condition: Collectible-Fine. Binding: No Binding
