Includes an introductory essay ("James Joyce and the National Library") by Noel Kissane - Education Officer, for National Library of Ireland; biographical chronology, bibliographical references. The printed card folder/wrappers has 21 leaves - all present and called for, each printed recto and verso, laid in loose as issued.

Regarded today as a cornerstone of 20th century literature - it has been chosen as the most important novel in the English language - listed in Modern Library's Top 100 Novels [1998],3 copies unaccounted for.Famous last chapter,Molly Bloom’s long unbroken soliloquy ending in an orgasmic ‘yes’.The book also proved to be a major test case for laws of freedom of expression.Forced underground by censors, "this was a cryptoclassic already before it was read,a subversive colossus", (Norman Sherry,James Joyce,Ulysses,2nd edition).Or as Joyce's long-suffering wife Nora succinctly put it,"I guess the man's a genius, but what a dirty mind he has, hasn't he?"
An intricate allegory of the Odyssey (with the hero being Latinised to Ulysses).Ulysses is divided into 18 parts, or 'episodes' as the Joyce scholars call them, each written in a different style and with a different Odyssean name, though the names themselves are never given in the text. The names are: Telemachus, Nestor, Proteus, Claypso, Lotus Eaters, Hades, Aeolus, Lestrygonians, Scylla and Charybdis, Wandering Rocks, Sirens, Cyclops, Nausicaa, Oxen of the Sun, Circe, Eumaeus, Ithaca, and Penelope.
Each episode is assigned, tacitly,a colour theme,a dominant organ of the body,an hour,a setting and other characteristics, though many of these remain a matter of scholarly dispute. The action takes place in Dublin on a single June day (June 14, 1904) and its three main characters are Leopold Bloom,Stephen Dedalus and Molly Bloom, who represent Ulysses,Telemachus and Penelope.Other characters and places also have their Homeric counterparts.
