By using a globeor a map such as that given on page 8, you can seethat the water surface of the earth is greater in extentthan the land surface ; in fact, it is about two and a halftimes as great. Hold the globe so that the north poleis pointing towards you. You are now looking at theNorthern Hemisphere. You will see that the land andwater surfaces are nearly equal, though the water isslightly the greater, while if you look at the SouthernHemisphere, you will see there is very little land com-pared to the great extent of the water.Put your finger down near the middle of one of thecontinents and move it over the surface in any direction,and you will sooner or later arrive at the coast. Try thisin several of the continents. You will always arrive atthe ocean. Thus the great land masses are entirelysurrounded by the sea. In other words, the land massesare huge islands.
