In pictorial slipcase with white titles on the spine, as issued. Without DJ's, as issued. Published on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name held at the Bildmuseet and Riksutstallningar Stockholm in 1999. Presents Alfredo Jaar's "Inferno And Paradiso". Highly personal selection of photojournalists who each contributed two images, one of Hell, the other of Heaven. The project was inspired, of course, by Dante Aleghieri's "La Divina Commedia", and Jaar shows how Dante's vision of Inferno and Paradiso remain just as relevant more than 700 years later. Being photojournalists, the contributors are at the forefront of human suffering, as it unfolds, and their images show their powerful response to and empathy for those who are in pain, that is to say, the overwhelming majority of people in the world. What is truly more surprising is that they are just as able to see a more hopeful, and for us, the viewers, equally necessary, side to humanity, such as the image of Danish teen-agers swimming joyfully on a beach. Some of the photographers are well-known such as Susan Meiselas and David Turnley. Many are not, and we have Alfredo Jaar to thank for bringing their brilliant work to our attention. "Alfredo Jaar is one of the most uncompromising artists working today. His installations, combining elements of photography, architecture, and theater, and often featuring graphic documentary imagery in the form of back-lit transparencies, explore the complex relationships between developed nations and the so-called Third World. In his work, Jaar tracks the ironies and injustices which characterize those relationships and plays out the systematic pursuit of profit which drives them" (Actar). An absolute "must-have" title for Alfredo Jaar collectors. This title is an art photography classic.
