Ingersoll. T. W., Photographer : Four photographs of Medora, Dakota Territory

St. Paul, MN: Ingersoll, ND.

Four photographs of the town of Medora, a railhead and meat-packing town founded on April Fool's Day in 1883 by Antoine de Vallambrosa, Marquis de Mores. The meatpacking plant went out of business by 1886. These photos are undated, but appear to be of the town in its heyday. They are mounted on heavy card stock, with gilt edging. Cards are 8-1/2 x 5-1/8 inches; images 7-9/16 x 4-3/8 inches. The name Ingersoll is printed in the right corner of each card, along with an address in St. Paul [MN]. Truman Ingersoll, a well-known St. Paul photographer, had a studio at that address between 1885 and 1890. Two separate views of the entire town from a distance, with the bluffs of the Badlands in the background; a medium view of the slaughterhouse; and a sharp close-up of an unidentified brick building, perhaps the recreation hall the marquis built for his workers. Two of the cards bear handwriting in ink on the verso, one identifying the scene as "Medora, Dak"; the other reads "Slaughterhouse, Medora, Dak." Photographs are in Very Good condition. Some soiling on the card mountings, but this has not affected the images. An interesting group of historical photos.
