Shirley Hughes began life in a house in West Kirby - in a family where early comics, seaside shows, dressing up and the cinema fuelled her imagination and set her on a path towards the visual arts. The long stretches of boredom during a wartime childhood created time - for reading and making books; and so,against a background of the intense imagery of the blitz, Shirley Hughes took the first steps on a journey which is told so compellingly in this narrative.
From West Kirby,to Oxford,to Florence,to London and her first commission as an illustrator, and to the present day - Hughes takes us along with her on a fascinating adventure.Meetings with the Amises, parking her bike outside Tolkien's house, the strains of jazz always in the background - the incidentals of Hughes' life are rich with humour and interest as characters, anecdotes and events sparkle through her memories.
'A Life Drawing' is the story of one of the greatest children's illustrators of our time - a personal story, rendered with a poignant and remarkable detail and deftness of touch.Much more than this, though,it is the narrative of the artist and of art.Life drawing at the Ruskin School of Art,the first tentative steps with colour and lithography - Hughes shows us how these techniques develop; so that we follow and begin to understand her own progression as an artist. And,alongside are always Arthur Rackham, Heath Robinson,Hockney,Picasso,Rembrandt. . .
'A Life Drawing' is riveting and enriching: a personal history which enables the reader to view art through the acutely detailed eyes of an artist - and so our view is taken one step nearer to the sun.
Shirley Hughes (b.1927).Born in Hoylake, near Liverpool, daughter of a department store owner.Educated at West Kirby High School.Studied drawing and costume design at Liverpool School of Art,and drawing and lithography at the Ruskin School of Drawing,Oxford.Since then, working freelance, she has illustrated more than 200 books for British,American and Dutch publishers. As an 'intimate chronicler of familiar childhood experience',she has developed a distinctive, easily recognisable way of drawing children, winning the Kate Greenaway Medal (1977)with 'Dogger'.
For black and white work, she uses pen and ink, sometimes with brushed-in areas of solid black; for colour, she works up from a fine sepia brush drawing, adding chalk, watercolour, gouache, and finally black ink.
