Named after an 80-gun third-rate ship of the line that was used to train seamen in gunnery in Plymouth harbour from 1856.Ship was replaced by the first rate HMS Windsor Castle (and then renamed HMS Cambridge) in 1869 before the gunnery school was moved onto land at the Plymouth naval barracks in 1907.This lasted until 1940 when a gunnery range used by the army and navy was opened at the old Wembury Point Holiday Camp (on the present site) which was named the Cambridge Gunnery School. In 1956 the school was commissioned as an independent shore establishment and was decommissioned on 30 March 2001.] VG-.Faint residual evidence of owner name to front pastedown along with an official black inked oval "SCIENTIFIC LIBRARY 256 H.M.S. CAMBRIDGE" stamp,a similar stamp to facing free endpaper too,The "HMS Cambridge" library stamp appears on the title page along with a fainter inked "SUPPLIED FOR THE PUBLIC SERVICE" stamp, the 'HMS Cambridge' stamp further appears randomly in some pages' margins and also randomly to either the front or rear of some of the b/w plates - but not on all of them. Publisher's original maroon cloth boards with a single-lined blind-tooled border to either and bright,crisp,blocked,capitalised,gilt-lettered title+author name to front board,similarly lettered but slightly oxidised and so not so crisp as front - gilt title,author,publisher to a darkened spine/backstrip,rear board plain maroon and undecorated.Spine/backstrip with bumping and reciprocal creasing inevitably causing.weakening of the cloth,fraying,splits and small tears with some minimal loss of the cloth to both head+foot of same,all corners gently pushed,lower corners with some minimal rubbing; front lower corner tip with cloth's production wrinkle and a plate/cup(?) partial semi-circular ring mark to front board,else rear board clean and unmarked.Off-setting from either pastedown to opposing face of both free endpapers,front hinge cracked,rear hinge unaffected.Top edges with fading colouring,fore-edges aged/toned and both sets - fore+lower edges - deckled (untrimmed); contents overall clean with minimal,random foxin/spotting or other blemishes.Stitching for signature of pp211-22 loose with top stitch broken,but other two stitches in situ,but making the signature move/slide when carefully handled,other signatures solid and sound.Described hard but honestly and fairly,reads worse than it actually is.UK,12mo HB,no dw/dj,2nd edn,5-318pp plus 3-47pp publisher's November,1900 catalogue to rear [paginated] includes author's 8pp Preface,separate contents+illustrations lists/ tables,XI (11) chapters and an Appendix (the strength of the Boer army),22 of 23 contemporary b/w plates - photographs and 1 battlefield b/w plan/map - just 1 missing plate between pp171/72 - all others present,includes [unpaginated] tissue-guarded b/w frntis; plus [unpaginated] title page,a printer's address page with blank verso and a contents list/table first page of publisher's catalogue. Visually the exterior appearance is acceptable and even internally, the book is also in an acceptable condition/state of preservation and presentation for a book of its age. The Boer War was the last major war of the Victorian age for the British Army and,perhaps more significantly,it was the last conflict that could be said to have its foundations in the practice of warfare as it had been fought for almost 500 years.The wind of change was nevertheless blowing across the South African veldt,for the citizen army of the Boers was employing new,state of the art weaponry - both small arms and artillery - which surpassed in quality and efficiency that of the British. Boer commando fighting was a comparatively new tactic which required major adjustment by the huge and slow moving military machine that the British Army had become.The Boers not only understood considerable difference the vital logistical apparatus of their age,including the railway system,could make to warfare,but also how to effectively neutralise it when used by their enemies. Hillegas is not an especially partisan view,though he finds much to admire in the Boers,and this book enables those interested in this war to understand it from all perspectives.Recommended. Hillegas was an American author, newspaper correspondent,and newspaper editor (1872-1918).This portrays his account of the Anglo-Boer War (1899 - 1902).He was sent to South Africa as a correspondent by The New York World and wrote this book on his return to New York after spending time with the Boer forces in the field.
