Folio. Entire issue, May 19, 1972, in original wraps with portrait of the author, light general wear-only, overall very clean and bright. When Hemingway died in 1961 several unpublished manuscripts of consequence were left in his estate. They included one work of nonfiction, about an Africa trip, 1954-1956, excerpts of which are included in this issue. The setting is a Kenya safari that Ernest and Mary took in the fall of 1953. The Hemingways spent their first two months in Kenya hunting in several areas while working on a story with a Look magazine photographer. Upon finishing that project, Ernest and Mary moved off on their own to the Kimana Swamp section of southern Kenya some 30 miles north of Mount Kilimanjaro. The manuscript begins as Hemingway takes command of the safari, and ends less than three weeks later. In 1999, Patrick Hemingway, Ernest's 2nd son, an adventurer and author in his own right, would edit the original 200,000 word manuscript and publish it as, True At First Light. According to the editor of the present magazine, "We publish an exclusive extract from an unpublished story written shortly before he died, 'Miss Mary's Lion.'" This may not be true, as the American magazine Sports Illustrated, in its January 3, 1972, issue, published the same title. We have not collated the stories, though we have both magazines, thus, we do not know if the story is the same or if only the title is the same. Issues of The Daily Telegraph Magazine were only occasionally published, as supplements to the The Daily Telegraph newspaper, London. Very scarce, and absent from most Hemingway collections..
