1874. First Edition. Engraved frontispiece of Elijah Stansbury. Maroon hardcover, beveled extremities of binding, gilt lettering/design on spine, 298 pages. Condition of binding: Expected wear, scattered discoloration, minor fraying at spine ends, short tear to first hinge, corners lightly bumped. Wear, discoloration, creases/bumps, foxing to preliminaries and endpapers. Frontispiece and tissue overlay foxed, damp spots, both appear to be re-bound separately in binding by former owner or a binder (engraved photo - a cabinet card - is of heavy paper stock, with one border trimmed to fit). Former owner's name on backside of frontispiece. Pages are very readable, with light age toning, periodic foxing/stains. Binding is tight/secure. Overall, book is Fair. Elijah Stansbury was born in 1791 and died in 1883. His early career included a bricklayer, then served in The War of 1812. He was one of the last surviving "Defenders of Baltimore." After the war he became the owner of his brother's business and expanded it to include dry goods and building supplies. He then went into government and politics, serving as mayor of Baltimore from 1848 to 1850. He lived until he was 92. He is buried in Baltimore Cemetery, Baltimore, Maryland. This book is his story, which is fascinating. This is the original 1874 edition, not a facsimile, photocopy, or a more recent reprint. Collectible.
