Number 148 of an edition limited to 750 numbered copies. Facsimile of the text and plates of the fifth edition published by Henry G. Bohn in 1852. 8vo; original green rexine lettered in gilt on spine and with gilt device to upper cover; pictorial dustwrapper, housed in protector; pp. (vi) + xvi + 359. Dustwrapper slightly edgeworn, and rather sunned and foxed; tape marks and foxing to endpapers; moderate foxing throughout. Good. 'Captain (later Sir) William Cornwallis Harris was an Englishman with a passion for the hunting of big game. "From my boyhood upwards," he says, "I have been taxed by the facetious with 'shooting madness', and truly a most delightful mania I have ever found it." An officer in the East India Company's corps of engineers, he was granted two years' leave on medical grounds, and decided to exploit this opportunity to indulge his interest in the wild game of Africa. He arrived at the Cape in 1836 and spent two years travelling in South Africa, from Port Elizabeth to as far north as the Limpopo River - described in his book as "a hunting expedition from the Cape of Good Hope through the territories of the Chief Moselekatse to the Tropic of Capricorn". But Harris was not just a hunter: he was a careful observer of the social and political situation in which he found himself - a situation of special interest because his visit coincided with the early days of the Great Trek, and he made detailed observations about the conditions of the Trekkers, and of their initial conflicts with the Bantu.'
