Donald Hall (1928-2018) was an American poet, writer, professor, literary critic, editor, and the fourteenth Poet Laureate of the United States. Hall received many awards for his writings including the Lamont Poetry Selection (known today as the James Laughlin Award) for Exiles and Marriages (1955), which was his first book. Tipped-in blue paper measuring 4 3/4" x 6 3/4" on the front free endpaper. The paper has the following printed in red text: "The Lamont Poetry Selection of the Academy of American Poets. In its second contest 'for the discovery and encouragement of new poetic genius,' The Academy of American Poets last April 7, 1955, invited publishers to submit an unpublished manuscript by a new poet--the selected book of poetry to be designated as The Lamont Poetry Selection. These contests were made possible by a generous bequest of Mrs. Thomas W. Lamont, and are expected to be run annually. The Judges for this second Contest were: Louise Bogan, John Holmes, Rolfe Humphries, Randall Jarrell, May Sarton. On October 18, 1955 the winner of the Contest was announced to be Mr. Donald Hall of Hamden, Connecticut and the publisher The Viking Press, Inc., New York City.
