UK,8vo HB,1st thus.[The true 1st edn originally published 1884,as a three-decker i.e. in 3 volumes and in a very,very low print run.This edn is believed to be the earliest reprint/reissue of (undated) 1887 edn.] VG.Neat black ink owner name+date (1887) to top,left hand corner of reverse of front free endpaper which also,has a W.H. Smith & Sons.London' impressed stamp just above owner's inked name.Bright, crisp,generally clean - very little grubbing/ marks - publisher's original,fairly sharp- cornered with bevelling,red cloth boards with bright,crisp,blocked gilt lettering to front cover and to spine/backstrip also - all with virtually no oxidisation of lettering and flora leaf design illustrated endpapers; some negligible shelf-wear to edges and corners.Rear cover with impressed/blind stamped publisher's colophon and light grubbing marks - nothing excessive though.Spine/backstrip with ubiquitous and inevitable,but slight darkening and both head+foot of same with a few minor small splits/tears (wear and tear with passage of time?).Top edges heavily aged/toned,fore-edges brighter and cleaner - all edges untrimmed; contents bright, tight and generally clean.Foxing/spotting to reverse of ffe and facing page of blank,similar foxing/spotting to rear endpapers and reverse of last page - body of text hardly affected by same fault - rear hinge cracked though.UK,8vo HB,1st thus.4-379pp [paginated] includes 76 (LXXVI) chapters,plus [unpaginated] blank half-title page,b/w illus frntis with a heavily foxed/spotted frntis tissue-guard; which has bled through to the frntis and frntis's reverse side, along with bleeding to concomitant spots on the title page opposite.Described hard but fairly and honestly - still a very acceptable collector's example.
