John Richard Green ( 1837-1883) was an English historian whose influential and popular "Short History of the English People" first appeared in 1874. Its immediate success was due to Green's engaging style and concentration on the lives of common people. This work did much to popularize history. Unfortunately, poor health prevented Green from publishing much more. This edition has 4 volumes, organized as follows : Vol. 1 - Pages 1 to 468 pages with 14 plates, complete; Vol. 2 - Pages 469 to 931 with 10 plates, complete; Vol. 3 - Pages 932 to 1409 with fold-out, color illustration of London Bridge and 5 plates, complete; Vol. 4 - Pages 1410 to 1906 with 5 plates, chronology, family tree of the British monarchs, index, corrections and additions, Each volume also has numerous maps and in-line illustrations, with a complete list of illustrations with notes in the front.. [Not a facsimile, recent reprint, or library book - this is the 1887 edition.] Dark brown binding; borders and publisher's logo in-blind on covers; gilt lettering and designs on spine. Colored map bound in, 823 pages plus two pages of advertising by publishers at end. Condition of binding: Lightly age toned; minor shelf wear; fraying to top/foot of spine; light bumps to corners and one extremity; faint stain to lower right corners of top cover. Free of cracks to hinges, stickers and bookplates. Interior: Long, faint gift inscription on blank page in preliminaries (strangely dated 1886, one year prior to publication of book); bump to lower right corner of text block; else overall Very Good. Text is clear and very readable. Colored page map clear and vivid. Pages free of insect infestation, tears, and writing in text. A nice historical first edition. This book, according to the author, is a history of the English people, not of English Kings or English Conquests. He passed lightly and briefly over the details of wars and diplomacies, and personal adventures of kings and nobles, and the pomp of courts. Instead he focuses on the incidents of the constitutional, intellectual, and social advance. He devoted more space to Chaucer, Caxton, the Poor Law of Elizabeth, and to the Methodist revival. He set Shakespeare among the heroes of the Elizabethan age, and placed the scientific inquiries of Royal Society next to the victories of the New Model.
