That mild,innocent and retiring gentleman
Mr. Lionel Buckby, who lived at Richmond in Surrey, had a talent for getting into water that was about to become hot.
Unfortunately he had a magnetic
attraction for people who were uncongenial
and often not respectable; and in this book we find him coping with a nephew, young, boisterous and enterprising, who is in the transitional stage between a black sheep and a successful man of affairs.Mr. Buckby, who has just inherited an estate in Norfolk with some odd conditions attached to the inheritance, finds himself acting as
host to the remarkable assortment of people his nephew has collected as business partners. The story moves at a brisk pace, and nearly all its turns and twists disclose Mr. Buckby's endearing habit of insisting on a common-sense explanation for the most peculiar happenings and his resolute refusal to attribute sinister motives to anybody. But Mr. Buckby takes his own standards and codes seriously, and he has become almost a symbol, for his standards are those of a tranquil age,and he is still unable to believe that there is anything really wrong with the world and its inhabitants.
Uncommon for a book to survive in such a good state, particularly with a dw/dj,
bearing in mind wartime production, and paper-rationing.A solid, sound copy.
