Gardner (1905-1977) was an American author and diesel machinist and inspector for the Maine Central Railroad. He is perhaps best-known for his Bantan series of novels which were highly inspired by Edgar Rice Burroughs's Tarzan. Bantan is a warrior-like protagonist who has many adventures and faces numerous perils on hidden islands in the South Pacific. The story in this book continues from the one in Bantan's Island Peril. In seeking vengeance against his opponent, Amar, Bantan finds himself on Mandoes Island but is taken prisoner and brought to a scientist known as "The Great One" who claims to have found the secret to longevity. Other characters are twin brothers Hulo and Humo; Loula, a servant girl who falls in love with Bantan; and the scientist's assistant, Luane, who also falls in love with Bantan..
