A Passage to India is the tale of three British newcomers to the colony. To the great disapproval of their countrymen, they try to befriend the Indians. A trip to Marabar Caves - an eerie, mysterious place that confuses and disturbs the visitors - ends with a British woman falsely accusing a respected Indian doctor of assault. The doctor is ultimately acquitted at trial; a potential riot is averted, but the people are more hostile and separate than ever. The author's writing is simple and direct, but the reality he portrays is a complex as anything in Proust or Virginia Wolf. He suggests there are dimensions to reality we can never apprehend.
