ERNEST BRAMAH : English Farming and Why I Turned It Up

The Leadenhall Press, London, 1894

First Edition (first printing). 8vo. 181pp + xvi publisher's advertisements at the rear + a tipped-in double-sided product advertisement. Textured cloth-covered boards, lettered, ruled and decorated in black and gold. The backstrip lightly browned with a touch of further very light discolouration to the board extremities. The title leaf torn and a little tender and with a little tanning to the paperstock. Quite a nice, bright copy. Handsome former owner bookplate to the front pastedown. The author's first book, a slightly tongue-in-cheek account of his farming exploits ("its perusal may save would-be farmers about five hundred a year"). Bramah, onetime secretary and editing associate of to Jerome K.Jerome, is perhaps more famous for his humour and detective fiction; his dystopian science fiction novel 'What Might Have Been' (1907) was an influence on Orwell's 'Nineteen Eighty-Four'.. Book. Book Condition: Good. Binding: Hardcover
