Diepraam, Willem (Photographer) & Van Westerloo, Gerard (Contributor) : Willem Diepraam Photographs: The Fragment Uitgeverij Amsterdam Edition

Fragment Uitgeverij Amsterdam, Amsterdam, Netherlands, 1991

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 208 pages. Retrospective collection of photographs. One of the best photography books of our time. Limited Edition of 2000 copies. The first and only edition. Precedes and should not be confused with the eponymous Focus Publishing title published ten years later, in 2001. Published as a hardcover original only with funding by the Dutch Ministry of Culture. There is no ISBN. The Limited Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Willem Diepraam: Oversize-volume format. Black cloth boards with titles embossed on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Willem Diepraam. Essay by Gerard van Westerloo. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Amsterdam, The Netherlands to the highest standards. The reproduction quality is exemplary in every respect. Without DJ, as issued. Presents "Willem Diepraam". Some of the photographer's finest and most representative images. For our money, still the best, that is, the most beautiful, book on Diepraam. A peripatetic photographer, Willem Diepraam began his career as a journalist for the Dutch newsweekly, Vrij Nederland. He has also been an avid collector of photographs, publicist, curator of exhibitions, and organizer of exhibitions of his own work. The latter demonstrates a deep and genuine empathy for the plight of the world's underpriveleged as well as an impeccable eye for form and composition. A committed moralist and aesthete at the same time, Willem Diepraam has long been an established name in European journalism and art photography circles, but remains virtually unknown in the United States. Knowledge of his brilliant work is long overdue here. An absolute "must-have" title for Willem Diepraam collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed, placed, and dated in black ink-pen on the front free endpaper by the photographer: "Willem Diepraam Chicago Jan 19 2002". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. Diepraam added a serpentine, tail-like underline. This title is a contemporary photography classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed, placed, and dated copy of the Limited Edition available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with duotone and color plates. One of the most brilliant photographers of our time. A fine collectible copy.
