Daniel Davis, Boston, MA, 1842

First Edition. Original publisher's dark brown cloth binding with gilt lettering on spine. Blind-stamped decorations on front and back. 5" x 7 3/4." Pages viii, [1] 2-218 (Davis's main text), [2] (two pages advertising Davis's apparatuses), [3] 4-70 (two-part catalogue advertising Wightman's apparatuses), complete. Many small black-and-white illustrations, complete. Pages are very clean and intact except for light age toning and light foxing. Covers are clean and intact overall but have moderate chipping at head and tail of spine, slightly bumped corners at top, a small bump on fore-edge on front, and light rubbing. First few leaves are slightly loosened but still strong and holding. A Very Good copy. An intriguing textbook about the nascent years of the studies of magnetism and electricity. Author Daniel Davis, Jr. notes in his Preface the theoretical nature of this book given how recently magnetism, electricity, and electromagnetism have become subjects of scientific study. Included are many small black-and-white illustrations of various scientific apparatuses relating to the subject matter. Also in back are two pages of ads that list the names and prices of apparatuses manufactured and sold by Davis and a two-part additional catalogue, "A Catalogue of Philosophical, Astronomical, Chemical and Electrical Apparatus, Imported, Manufactured and Sold by Joseph M. Wightman, Successor to Claxton and Wightman, No. 33 Cornhill, Corner of Franklin Avenue Boston" ("Printed by Samuel N. Dickinson" in Boston, 1842). The first part of Wightman's catalogue is on Pages [3], 4-48. The latter part of Wightman's catalogue (Pages 49-70) contains the "Catalogue and Prices of Philosophical Apparatus Manufactured and Sold by Joseph M. Wightman, No. 33 Cornhill, Boston." The following are the subjects listed in Davis's textbook under the Contents: "Definitions and Explanations," "Production of Electricity: Mechanical or Frictional Electricity; Galvanic or Voltaic Electricity; Thermo-Electricity; Animal Electricity," "Directive Tendency of the Magnet: In Reference to Another Magnet; In Reference to a Current of Electricity; In Reference to the Earth," "Induction of Magnetism: By the Influence of a Magnet; By the Influence of a Current of Electricity; By the Influence of the Earth," "Induction of Electricity: By the Influence of a Current of Electricity; By the Influence of a Magnet; By the Influence of the Earth," and "Electrotype Process: Origin of the Electrotype; Processes for Electrotypes in Copper; Processes for Gilding, Silvering, and Platinating.".
