UK,slim 8vo HB,minus dw/dj,1st cheap edn. [Originally and first published London May,1942.This edn is the first publication other than that,in the same year.] VG.No owner inscrptn.Slightly age-soiled and minimally grubbed,sharp-cornered, publisher's original plain red cloth bds with bright, crisp, printed black ink lettering to a lightly sunned spine/ backstrip, and clean plain white pastedowns - verso and recto of front and rear free endpapers respectively, are foxed/spotted, hinges solid and sound without any cracking. With negligible shelf-wear, bumping or creasing to edges and corners - no nicks, tears.splits or fraying present. With war- time paper rationing and conservation (1940-47) of that and other materials, pulping was actively encouraged,so publishers with restricted and limited quantities for publishing, opted towards highly acidic and therefore cheaper paper, allowing for more books to be produced.Books made with this cheaper material tend to degrade faster, exhibiting several faults, blemishes, foxing /spotting etc.,and subsequently are uncommon and harder to find in a particularly fine condition.] UK,slim 8vo HB,minus dw/dj,1st cheap edn, 14-252pp [paginated] includes X (10) chapters, profuse part+whole page b/w line illustrations by Thomas Henry interspersed throughout the text and the book, plus [unpaginated] half-title page with publisher's list of already published 'William' titles (23) to its recto,b/w illustrated frntis, title page and contents list/table. An uncommon survivor edn/issue,along with its true first edns, especially in this cheaper edn.A highly collected and prolific children's books author in her typical style and format and will be an important and welcome addition to the canon. Thomas Henry Fisher [1879-1962] worked as Thomas Henry.Born Eastwood, Nottinghamshire.Studied at Nottingham School of Art.He worked as a lithographer (his first job was the 'sailor' trademark for Player's cigarettes) and poster designer before becoming a regular contributor of cartoons and humorous illustrations to newspapers and magazines. Contemporary periodicals included The Boy's Own Paper,The Captain,Chums,Crusoe, Happy Magazine,Home Magazine,The Humorist, Nottingham Guardian,Passing Show,Punch and The Windsor Magazine amongst others. His forte was the funny side of school life and he illustrated the first 34 of Richmal Crompton's 'William' books in pen and ink in a cheerful, effective and remarkably consistent style.Although the first of these books was published in 1922,Fisher did not meet Richmal Crompton until 1954. Richmal Crompton,British author, born Richmal Crompton Lamburn in Lancashire in 1890.Studied at London University, subsequently becoming Classics mistress at Bromley High School before being compelled to retire because of illness.Best known for the enormously popular 38 'William' books - two being re-issued with new title(s) - beginning with 'Just William', and the last 'William the Lawless' published posthumously in 1970 - books, although she also wrote several novels for adults.Died,1969.
