The Old Plymouth Society produced a recommended preservation Schedule in 1930,revised it in November,1938 to bring it up to date.In November,December of 1942,after enemy air raids had taken a toll on old and new buildings within the city limits and beyond, the above compilers produced the new record, based on the previous work by the late A.S. Parker,F.R.I.B.A,with historical notes by the late C. W. Bracken, B.A.It indicated what was left of ancient buildings referenced in previous records and comprised brief notes on whole, portions and/or isolated fragments of antiquarian value. The items were arranged, where possible according to the streets they were in or had been situated. Those that didn't come under that classification,e.g. churches, these were grouped in a separate section, the street system,as far as possible, was arranged in a south to north direction. Devonport, Stonehouse, Stoke Damerel, St. Budeaux, and Weston Peverell were treated separately, along with certain items within the then latest City Boundary Extensions and also a section dealng with ancient direction-stones, boundary stones, and milestones. At the Society's AGM in May,1954,deciding to re-write the 1942 review/record.This booklet embodies that present and latest record. Areas include the old town - streets: Lambhay,Martin's Court,Cocksley's Court,Castle Street,New Street and some Houses,Teat's Hill. The Barbican, Southside Street+Houses,Friar's Lane,Quay Road, Batter Street,Exchange Street,Notte Street, Woolster Street,Finewell Street+Prysten House, St. Andrew Street,High Street and buildings, Princess Street,Looe Street+buildings,Treville Street etc.An uncommon item of local history ephemera.
Visually the external appearance is more than acceptable, and even internally,is also in a presentable condition/state of preservation and presentation for a book of it's near 70 year-old age and nature, i.e. an ephemeral, wraappered booklet. It is only the minimal faults described that prevents a slightly higher grading overall. Despite that,it really is still an exemplary example for it's cleanliness and lack of other or age-acquired detracting faults commonly encountered in an item of comparable production and age.
