In the autumn of 1869,a Russian novelist, exiled in Dresden, returns to St Petersburg. Travelling on a false passport, his mission is to collect the effects of his dead stepson,Pavel.Pavel's clothes are still in his rented room, but his papers are in the hands of the Tsarist police; among the papers there is an incriminating list of names,of targets in the wave of terror lapping at the city. Hounded by police spies, distraught, and suffering from attacks of falling sickness, the novelist is trapped between the machinery of the state and the stirrings of rebellion.Reluctantly fascinated by his stepson's landlady and by her precocious daughter, wrapped in private grief but interrogated by police inquisitors,he is dragged into a netherworld of disguise, suspicion, subterfuge and revolution. At the centre of the vortex there stands the menacingly charismatic Nechaev, focus of the fears of the establishment and the hopes of the conspirators. As the warehouse district of the city goes up in flames,it is the anarchist Nechaev who forces the writer to confront both his own powers and responsibilities, and the sinister ambiguities surrounding the death of his stepson. Coetzee was the first writer to win the Booker Prize twice, the first time with 'The Life & Times of Michael K' in 1983 and the second with 'Disgrace' in 1999 (see my book ID rja527215 in my 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die catalogue.). So far, only two others have achieved the same level of success: Peter Carey in 1988 and 2001 and Hilary Mantel in 2009 and 2012.In fact, his title of 'Summertime' - see book ID rja546615 was longlisted, then shortlisted and was an early favourite to win the Man Booker a third time, only to lose out to Hilary Mantel's 'Wolf Hall'. Consistently longlisted in 2003 - for 'Elizabeth Costello' and in 2005 for 'Slow Man'.He was also to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2003.
