In the belief that the fables attributed to Aesop are more entertaining and enjoyable to children without the morals so often accompanying them,Margaret Clark has compliled a delightful collection of 27 of these tales. All are told informally but in a direct fashion, highlighting the personalities of each animal or human character. The stories are brief - rarely more than one page long - and set in surprisingly readable italics appropriate to the casual tone of the fables. Beautifully displayed with and within the text, are Charlotte Voake's accomplished illustrations. Dominated by sepia tones, these watercolor washes with fine ink details capture the distinct mood and wit of each fable. At times reminiscent of 18th-century fashions and furnishings, each of these pictures is essential to the overall visual effect. With a plethora of such collections available, there may seem little need for one more. But this fresh and very contemporary interpretation of Aesop's wisdom will make readers realise why the fables have endured. More suitable for independent reading or sharing one-on-one,this collection reflects age-old stories that every child can understand and enjoy. Margaret Clark was the director of children's publishing at The Bodley Head for sixteen years until her retirement at the end of 1988. Charlotte Voake was born in Wales and brought up in Chepstow and Wirral. Her first book was published while she was still a History of Art student at London University and, despite her lack of formal art training, she quickly became recognized as one of the most outstanding contemporary children's book illustrators, with works such as 'Over The Moon','First Things First' and 'Mrs Goose's Baby.'
