UK,12mo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.FINE-/VG. No owner inscrptn and no price-clip to dw/dj.Bright, clean, matt, colour design illustrated dw/dj with b/w+pale blue letters to front panel, similar colour lettering to spine which also has the Crime Club logo in white, rear panel with a very minimally grubbed white background with publisher's advert for a Poirot 6-story collection,in 'The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding'; with negligible but ubiquitous shelf-wear with miniscule rubbing/chipping with reciprocal loss to corner tips, and some minimal bumping with reciprocal creasing and miniscule chipping - lettering complete and unaffected - to head+foot of spine/backstrip.A pair of approx. 10mm closed tears, one to the head of spine's rear gutter's fold/crease and the other, about 2cm further along from spine's front gutter's fold/crease,on the top edges and a tiny 4mm closed tear to top, rear corner tip.Top+fore-edges exceptionally bright and clean with very faint toning to either and very faint and minimal foxing to the top edges alone; contents bright, tight, clean, solid and sound; text block virtually pristine - no foxing,or other blemishes,no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners - appears unread, apart from my own collation.Bright, crisp, clean, generally sharp-cornered - rear corners top+bottom are gently pushed - publisher's original, plain red cloth boards with black letters+logo to spine/backstrip and near immaculate plain white endpapers - a single foxing spot and the merest hint of off-setting to both free endpapers.UK, 12mo HB+dw/dj,1st edn,9-256pp [paginated] includes XXV(25) chapters; plus [unpaginated] half-title+title pages,a dedication, and a foreword by Mark Easterbrook - the narrator.
A particularly exceptional example, notwithstanding the book's age - 60 years old - for the collector.
A highly collected and prolific author, and a item in Christie's bold style and will be an important and welcome addition to the canon.
The title,a biblical synonym for Death,is the name of an organization which kills by black magic and also the name of a house, formerly an inn,in the local village.A priest summoned to attend a dying woman is later murdered.A list of names is found and the narrator,Mark Easterbrook, discovers unsuspected connections.Novel includes Christie's novelist detective Ariadne Oliver.
But here,Mrs Oliver does not function as a detective,in that she rarely participates in the investigation and contributes only tangentially to the solution. She inadvertently helps the investigators to determine the type of poison used to kill the murder victims, thus saving the life of another character.
