'There are too many pigeons in Paris,' decreed the Chief of Police,
and so - in due course - he ordered them to be deported in large numbers
far,far away to the forests of the Landes and of the Dordogne.Poor Evangeline! She had just settled down in a nest under a grgoyle on Notre Dame Cathedral with Gabriel,a handsome pigeon from the Arc de Triomphe, when their happness was cut
short. In no time at all Gabriel was
on his way to the Landes and Evangeline to the Dordogne.
Life in the forest was frightening for a city pigeon, but Evangeline managed to survive - first with a flock of friendly pigeons that took her to live with them in their cave-home,later in the dovecote of a farmer who raised pigeons as a hobby
and showed them in Paris. And all the
while,in true pigeon fashion, she mourned for Gabriel. How Evangeline finally returned to Paris where she found Gabriel waiting, somewhat impatiently,by their abandoned nest,
and how the young farmer found his true love in Paris, too, are told with
the warmth and humour that mark Mrs Carlson's writing.
In 1957,the pigeons of Paris were deported just as Miss Carlson describes here, and in time many of them were able to find their way back.Mrs Carlson sympathetic imagination was caught, and out of this true happening 'Pigeon of Paris' came into being.
