Richard Burton often claimed that he would rather have played rugby for Wales than play Hamlet.Less well known was his wish to write.'A Christmas Story' was the only published fruit of this ambition and showed that he could indeed have become a writer of warmth, wit and perception.Set in a Glamorgan mining village and seen through the eyes of a small boy stoning raisins for the pudding on Christmas Eve,the story is strongly autobiographical and, among other things,a ringing tribute to the eldest sister who brought him up from the age of two.
This story, first published in 1964,has long been out of print, but there was a later subsequent re-issue; LONDON,HODDER &
STOUGHTON,1989 and Sally Burton has provided a sympathetic introduction which places it in the context of the Jenkins family of Pontrhydyfen and the twelfth of thirteen children, who became the international star who transfixed the world with the magnetism of his personality and the sound of his Welsh voice.See also rja645516 for another similar example of this true 1st edn.
Richard Burton, the actor, his first literary attempt of a short story set at Christmas,in a Welsh mining village.A scarce and an uncommon, original title albeit without it's original dw/dj.
