William John Burley (b. 1st August,1914 – d. 15th November,2002) was a British crime writer, best known for his books featuring the detective Charles Wycliffe, which became the basis of the popular television series Wycliffe, shown from 1994 to 1998.Burley was born in Falmouth, Cornwall.
He began with books about an amateur detective before deciding to concentrate on the investigations of a professional policeman - Wycliffe - who had made his bow in 'Three-Toed Pussy' (1968) moved on to centre stage in 'To Kill a Cat' (1970).
A fracas in a hotel Gents results in a man's death.Mainly on the evidence of a local antiquarian bookseller,Simon Meagor,George Barker is convicted of manslaughter and sent to prison. On his release he kills himself.
Barker's daughter,Morwenna - the redhead - holds the bookseller responsible for her father's death and the subsequent breakup of her family. She concieves an obsessive hatred for him,but unexpectedly turns up at his shop one day looking or employment.
Revenge of a form of therapy? Before Simon Meagor has a chance to find out,Morwenna disappears and Detective Superintendent Wycliffe becomes involved in a case which deeply disturbs his own peace of mind.
Here is a brand new case (then 1997) - the twenty-first - for the Cornish detective, who has become Britain's favourite TV cop following the four series starring Jack Shepherd.
