The River Tamar, the boundary between Devon and Cornwall, was once the busiest trade highways in Southern England. On its banks was situated a thriving industrial community, diverse, colourful and vital. Minerals abounded: copper, tin, silver, wolfram and many others have been extracted, the famous Devon Great Consols being at one time the richest copper mine in Europe. It later provided half the world's arsenic supply. Railways,a notable early canal, paddle steamers, market gardening, lime burning, and the bustling river quays which handled the resultant traffic are described, and their engineering and economic problems assessed,in this careful and lucid study. Industry and agriculture were closely connected in the Valley, forming part of an industrial complex that is now entirely shattered.By the first world war nearly a quarter of the working population had emigrated. The Tamar has since remained deserted, its traffic killed by rail and road transport. Its unusual and varied scenery is among the least known in Britain, and hitherto its extraordinary industrial past has been hardly known outside the South West. This book, like the others in this well-established series of standard works, includes a gazetteer listing and describing the industrial remains which may be seen today - a rich and picturesque collection. This is a story of fortunes and disasters,of determination - such as in the building early last century of a two-mile canal tunnel, then the longest tunnel of any kind in the country - and of working conditions in an isolated and unique community.Illustrated with half- tones, maps and b/w line drawings. See also,rja484414 for another title from the same series. A popular title from the 'The Industrial Archaeology of the British Isles'; a 3- part series, the first group of books, edited by Dr E.R.R. Green, consisting of regional history and eventually covering the whole of the British Isles. The second group of volumes examines smaller areas in greater detail. Finally, there are volumes on specific subjects. All books have the same format and are uniform.
