Muirhead Bone (1876-1953) was born in a Glasgow suburb, one of eight children of a journalist. While studying to be an architect (1890-94),he attended evening classes at Glasgow School of Art.In 1901 he moved to London. He married Gertrude Dodd,a writer, and later illustrated several of her books.Bone was the first artist to receive government recognition as an Official War Artist(1916).From 1939 to 1946,he was Official War Artist to the
Admiralty. He and his wife travelled extensively in France,Holland and Sweden and lived for several years in Italy and Spain. In 1937,he was knighted.Died in Oxford and is commemorated with a memorial
tablet in the crypt of St. Paul's
Cathedral,London.A painter, draughtsman and self-taught etcher,he was known for panoramic architectural and landscape views sometimes with tiny figures enhancing the illusion of scale - certainly demonstrated in this book; however, some of his book illustrations were more intimate in feeling.
