In the past watermills have been so familiar and such an accepted part of rural Cornish life that they evoked little
interest, receiving only scant reference from writers and historians.
Charles Henderson,in his exhaustive studies of documentary material, left extensive notes on many aspects of historical Cornwall including watermills and windmills, whilst Arthur J. Saundry of Penzance carried out some research and field work on watermills in West Cornwall.
Due perhaps to the suitability of the undulating Cornish countryside with its fast flowing rivers and streams, the watermill became so abundant throughout the length and breadth of the county over the centuries that it has been suggested there may have been as many as three thousand mills operational at one time or another during the last few centuries.Yet now the watermill, superseded and replaced
by advanced electrical milling equipment,
is fast becoming a romantic remembrance of clacking waterwheel and tranquil riverside scene,an idea fostered by such paintings as Creswick's "The Valley Mill"
- actually Trevillet Mill,near Boscastle
- and numerous others.
Although the subject of watermills may at
first seem a limited one, detailed study reveals the opposite, for they present a varied field passing from historical research,to the craft of the miller and millwright who worked unaided by all the technological advantages and knowledge of today, relying on ingenuity to overcome a range of problems. This edition is now out-of-print as publisher ceased trading in the 1980's.
