It is only the minor toning fault described that prevents a slightly higher grading overall. Despite that,it is still an exemplary example for its cleanliness and lack of other detracting faults.                     Initially,the concept started life as re-writes of about five stories he had originally written three years earlier, stories which proved to be too strong for some readers.Originally submitted to an editor at Gollancz,she found them to be among the most disgusting things she had ever read.The paperback house SPHERE,by contrast, accepted them at once,and gave the author a firm committment to publish anything else.Published as paperback originals and paperback 1st edns, the only other hardback issues were the 1985 Weidenfeld & Nicolson,200 limited,signed+ numbered,3 vols sets and the 3 single trade hardback edns; dw/dj's illustrated by Barker.
