He refused offers to leave Germany during world War II, in order to support German Jews, and was deported to Theresienstadt concentration camp in 1943, where he was named honorary president of the Aeltestenrat. After the war he lived and worked in London and the United States. In 1954 the Leo Baeck Institute for the study of the history of the Jews from German-speaking countries was established in his name, and he served as its first president. (EJ) SUBJECT(S) : Pharisees.
