Robert Sargent Austin (1895-1973).Worked as Robert Austin.Born in Leicester,brother of painter and etcher F.G. Austin.Studied part-time at Leicester School of Art from the age of seven,and full-time from the age of thirteen (1909-11).Worked as an apprentice printer and lithographer (1911-1913).
Attended the Royal College of Art on a scholarship (1914-16 and 1919-1922) studying engraving under Frank Short. Served in the Royal Artillery (1916-19). Studied engraving on a scholarship at the British School in Rome (1922-23); elected to the Faculty(1926).Travelled in Germany, then returned to England(1925).Teacher of engraving at the Royal College of Art (1927-44) and Professor of Graphic Design (1948-55).He became known during the 1920's for his etchings and etching/ engravings of Italian figure subjects, which were drawn with great precision, somewhat in the manner of Durer.A sensitive topographer,he produced pencil landscape illustrations for travel books on which he collaborated with his wife Ada Harrison.His illustrative work also included humorous figures sketches for children's books and small but very striking b/w line drawings for G.K. Chesteron's 'The Ballad of the White Horse'.
