Adolph Sutro (1830-1898) was a German-American engineer, San Francisco mayor, businessman, and Comstock Lode silver magnate. Notably, Sutro had other land holdings in the Land's End district of San Francisco and built notable places of interest such as Cliff House. Construction of the eighteen-acre Sutro Heights estate began in 1881. By 1883, Sutro had allowed the general public to tour his gardens for the fee of one dime. Upon his passing in 1898, his daughter, Emma Sutro Merritt, succeeded him as the resident of the Sutro Heights estate. After she passed away in 1938, the Sutro family sold the estate to Works Progress Administration (WPA). In 1939, the WPA demolished the Sutro residence and any remaining statues in the gardens. The Sutro Heights estate was then converted into a city park. Today, Sutro Heights Park is now part of the Golden Gate National Recreational Area.. Book. Book Condition: Very Good.
