Copper engraving, 32.5 x 45 cms, one or two small marginal repairs (not affecting printed area), recent hand-colour, blank verso. The first plate in Loggan’s “Oxonia Illustrata”, which is generally considered to be one of the most significant illustrated works about the University. Born in Danzig (where there was a considerable Scottish population at the time) Loggan learned his trade in Amsterdam, moved to England and in 1669 was appointed engraver to the University of Oxford, in which capacity he was commissioned to draw and engrave all the colleges and halls for the book.
