Camden, William:
Annales rerum Anglicarum et Hibernicarum, Regnante Elizabetha [...]
Imprint: Lug. Batavorum [Leiden], Ex Officina Elzeviriana, 1625
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback
4to. First Elzevir edition, and the first edition overall of the second part. pp. [xvi], xvi, 855, [xli]. With engraved title page but lacking the portrait of Elizabeth I by Crispin van Queboren. An engraved potrait of similar vintage (measuring 12.5 x 7.5 cms) has been mounted and bound in facing the title. It’s clearly derived from van Queboren’s plate, although reversed, and may well be from the 1639 8vo Elzevir edition (Willems 475). Latin text, occasional marginalia. Eighteenth century red morocco, slightly rubbed. Book-label of T. Fentiman & Sons, booksellers in Leeds, on front pastedown.
Camden is justly famous for his Britannia, first published in 1586. The Annales, covering the reign of Elizabeth I, were written at the instigation of Lord Burghley, who granted Camden extraordinary access to his personal and state papers. The first part appeared in 1615 but the second part of the work was printed posthumously here., Willems: 227.
