The Schneider Trophy contest is possibly the most famous air race of all time. The British Supermarine team won the final three contests in 1927, 1929 and 1931, and R.J. Mitchell’s pioneering sea-plane designs were of immense value in the development of the Spitfire. 1929 was also significant in that Aircraftsman T.E. Shaw (Lawrence of Arabia) was seconded to the British high speed flight on his return from India and assisted in preparations for the race.
