Jacotin. Pierre:
Le Kaire, Plan Particulier de la Ville
Imprint: Paris, c. 1820
Copper engraving, 66 x 99 cms, engraved by Vicq and Dandeleux after Jacotin et al., trivial restoration to centrefold, blank verso. From the second edition of the Description de l’Egypte, correctly blind-stamped top right, published by Panckoucke 1820-29.
Surveyed 1798-1801 by Jacotin (1765-1827) and other savants attached to Napoleon’s Commission des sciences et arts d'Egypte during the French occupation, this is the first truly accurate printed plan of the city (earlier maps such as the Braun & Hogenberg are far more schematic). Jacotin was appointed head of engineers and geographers during the Egyptian campaign, but Napoleon forbade the publication of any surveys of the country and his maps were only printed after the Restoration of Louis XVIII.
