Steven, E. E. (pseudonym of Katherine Yates) : Kat and Copy-cat

Patten Company, Ltd., Honolulu, HI, 1929

Original publisher's orange cloth binding in original orange and white paper dust jacket. Black lettering printed on front panel and spine of dust jacket. Dust jacket protected in a paper-backed mylar sleeve. 5 1/4" x 7 3/4." 268 pages, complete. Pages are very clean and intact except for occasional tiny spots, offsetting on front and back endpapers, the occasional stain, and part of a dampstain limited to bottom edge of text block near spine. Covers are very clean and intact except for a dampstain at tail of spine, some wear along front and back outer joints and back inner hinge (they appear to have chipping but are still strong and holding), and slight wear to extremities. Dust jacket is clean and intact overall but has light age toning, slight chipping and browning along top edge, and a dampstain toward tail of spine. If dust jacket were laid flat, the dampstain measures 3 1/2" x 1 1/2." The dampstain on book measures 2 1/4" x 1/2" and extends 1/2" from spine toward fore-edge at bottom of text block. Text is unaffected by dampstain. A Good book in a Good dust jacket. A unique mystery novel set in O'ahu, Hawai'i. This is a story that combines mystery with humor. Please note this book contains negative stereotypes of and derogatory terms used toward Chinese and Japanese people. Excerpt from front flap: "The situations are thoroughly human and the romance which is interwoven, has its full complement of ups and downs, the 'downs' being chiefly engineered by the delectable sisters, Kat and Copy-cat. The local color of the story is particularly vivid and is indicative of the author's familiarity with the scenes depicted." Katherine Yates (1865-1951) was a Canadian-American author who wrote under different pen names including the one used for this book, E. E. Steven. Yates lived in Ontario, the United States on the mainland, and Honolulu, Hawai'i. By 1910, Yates had moved to Honolulu after living in Chicago. Yates remained in Honolulu until 1942 amid the tumultuous circumstances of World War II. She moved back to the mainland and lived in California. Yates may have also traveled to other parts of the world outside of Canada and the U.S. as there are records that she applied for passports to countries such as Tahiti, New Zealand, China, India, Japan, (possibly) the Philippines, Europe, and the British Isles..
