Author's presentation inscription to Merrick Bowker, dated March 1930, to front free endpaper. Crown 8vo; original olive-green cloth, lettered in black on spine and upper cover; pp. viii + 307 + (v). Binding somewhat slack; some wear to extremities; fore-corners of upper board a bit bumped; archival tape reinforcing to head of upper joint and hinge; moderate foxing throughout; one leaf of prelims. appears to have been removed, but pagination remains correct. Fair to good condition. The Bowker and Slater families were prominent 1820 Settlers, and have remained proud of their heritage. This, Slater's first novel, "is a sentimental pioneering novel set in the Eastern Cape ... On his undoubted poetic gifts, his pioneering work as an anthologist, his doggedness in the face of indifference, pride in his Settler ancestry and love for his fellowmen of all races, Slater's reputation must surely rest." - E. Pereira, in DSAB IV, pp. 576-7. Click here for full details of this book, to ask a question or to buy it on-line.
