Paper reads: "Respectfully submitted, James Slade, City Engineer Vc." Paper and signature are clean and intact. James Slade (1816-1882) was an American civil engineer. He was elected City Engineer of Boston from 1855-1862. As City Engineer, Slade oversaw the expansion of the city's waterworks and authored several city plans involving city development via land reclamation. Slade played a critical role in the formation of the Boston Public Garden and was the consulting engineer for waterworks projects in Washington, D.C.; Hartford, Connecticut; Baltimore, Maryland; Salem, Massachusetts; and St. John, New Brunswick..
