No date, circa 1920s. 4 1/4" x 8 3/4" folded. 8" x 8 3/4" unfolded. Unpaginated, twenty-three pages (twelve leaves printed front and back; front cover not counted in pagination), complete. Many color illustrations (most, if not all, of which appear to be black-and-white printed photographs with post-process colorization), complete. Brochure is very clean and intact except for light age toning and slight wear and two small holes on vertical fold line of front cover. A Very Good copy. Beautiful folding brochure with much visual appeal. This brochure promotes the Overland Limited, a passenger train that ran between San Francisco and Chicago; the "San Francisco Overland Route"; and travel from San Francisco to Asia via steamer. There are brief sections describing the Overland Limited, steamship services, exchange rates, and steamship ticketing information. Most of the brochure is composed of color illustrations with brief text promoting and describing various destinations travelers can visit in the United States and Asia. Among the named landmarks and places of interest are the Philippines; China; Japan; Honolulu, Hawai'i; San Francisco; Stanford University; Lick Observatory; Hotel Del Monte; Paso Robles; Southern California cities; California vineyards and orchards; Yosemite; Mount Shasta; Lake Tahoe; Great Salt Lake; Salt Lake City; Yellowstone National Park; Weber Canyon; Green River, Wyoming; Missouri Valley; Grand Canyon of the Colorado; Chicago; Niagara Falls; Boston; Philadelphia; and New York City. There is a dedicated section in back that describes the various steamship services such as the Pacific Mail Steamship Company, Occidental & Oriental Steamship Company, and Toyo Kisen Kaisha Company. Specific steamships are named such as the "Mongolia" and "Manchuria"; the "Korea" and "Siberia"; the "China"; the "Asia" and "Persia"; and the "Maru" liners which include the "Nippon Maru," "Hong Kong Maru," "American Maru," "Tenyo Maru," and "Chiyo Maru." No illustrations accompany the steamer information section, but brief text promotes and describes the steamship companies and their ships. For example, the "Mongolia" and "Manchuria" are commended for their decks, accommodations, dining saloon, state rooms, and suites. The "Korea" and "Siberia" are similarly promoted for their "watertight compartments," cabin accommodations," suites, dining saloon, music room and library, social hall, and lavatories and baths. The Overland Limited was an American passenger train that ran between San Francisco and Chicago. It was jointly operated by the Southern Pacific Railroad (from San Francisco to Ogden, Utah), Union Pacific Railroad (from Ogden to Omaha, Nebraska and Council Bluffs, Iowa), and Chicago & Northwestern Railway (from east of the Missouri River to Chicago).
