'The Xhosas nicknamed the regiment (the 74th Highlanders) the "tortoises".... on account of the fancied resemblance between the regimental tartan and the checkered tortoises that abound on their plains. The volume contains accounts of many engagements and incidents in the campaign, and also some information respecting the wreck of the Birkenhead, a vessel which was bringing reinforcements to the army in the field; 9 officers and 349 men were lost, besides the crew, only 5 officers and 109 men escaping. There are also some details respecting the expedition against the Basuto chief Moshesh.'
